The soil in your lawn should be moist when you aerate it, as the tines may struggle to penetrate the ground if the soil is dry. If there has been no rain recently, it is best to water the lawn a day or two before aerating to ensure that the soil is moist. Overall, solid-tines offer more of a general aeration treatment for well established and maintained lawns. 

For lawns with more severe compaction problems, hollow tines usually offer the best solution. Hollow tines are also the best option for use on soil with high clay content.
